Alanson Lock (Crooked River) Has Reopened After Emergency Repairs

Contact:  Tom MacLean 231-347-2311
Agency: Natural Resources

July 2, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced that the Alanson Lock on Crooked River reopened July 1.

Located in Emmet County and part of Michigan's popular inland waterway, the lock was closed June 16 for repairs by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after technicians noticed a crack on a shaft that operates the doors for the lock.

The lock, which is owned and maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers and operated by the Department of Natural Resources, has been repaired and, after testing, is safe to resume operations.

The lock equipment, which is 41 years old, will undergo a major overhaul this fall, after the lock closes for the season.

The DNR and the Army Corps of Engineers would like to thank all visitors, lake owners and boaters for their patience.

For more information or updates, contact Petoskey State Park at (231) 347-2311, or visit www.michigan.gov/dnr, under "Recreation, Camping & Boating." Lock fees are $6 for a recreational daily pass, $12 for a commercial daily pass, and $45 for a seasonal pass. Seasonal passes for commercial vessels are $90. Lock passes can be purchased at the lock.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
