• Inland Lakes and Streams
Michigan has over 36,000 miles of streams, and more than 11,000 lakes and ponds. These precious water resources and the benefits they provide are protected by several state laws from impairment due to pollution, physical alterations and nuisance aquatic species. The State's water resources are monitored by the Department of Environmental Quality and partnering organizations to determine the water quality, the quantity and quality of aquatic habitat, the health of aquatic communities, and compliance with state laws.

• Surface Water
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is committed to protecting and preserving Michigan's water resources. There are several programs in place which support this goal.

• Water Management
Water Management Activities that may have potential impacts to the public trust, riparian rights, or may impair or destroy the waters or other natural resources of the state, including inland lakes and streams, the Great Lakes, wetlands, and groundwater, are regulated by the DEQ. Information on the DEQ permit processes and water resource related databases and digital maps is provided.
