DNR Management Review & Corrective Actions

The DNR has established a systematic process for gathering information regarding the sustainability and improvement of forest management practices. Reporting of that information to management and the process for formal management review is described in Forest Certification Work Instruction 1.2 - Management Review Process for Continual Improvement in the Management of Forest Resources. This review process for recording, evaluating and reporting nonconformance with the forest certification standards and related DNR forest certification instructions involves the following:

  1. Internal Audits of Forest Management Units (FMUs). Three to four FMUs per year are normally audited, with the number depending on budgetary and staffing constraints. The schedule is issued by the Statewide Council (SWC). Internal audits are conducted by a DNR lead auditor and an audit team. FMD district supervisors and WLD management unit supervisors monitor implementation of internal audit corrective action plans and report pending or continuing nonconformance during the annual field management review process.

  2. Periodic Re-Certification and Annual Forest Certification Surveillance Audits are conducted by certified Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) auditors to assess the conformance of DNRE operations with forest certification standards.

  3. Field Management Reviews of the Annual Forest Certification Audit results are conducted to evaluate field operations and DNR programs on a statewide basis. A report is drafted for submission to the DNR Statewide Council (SWC), addressing the conformance of DNR operations with the forest certification standards, and providing recommendations for improvement. The SWC approves changes necessary to continually improve conformance with work instructions. DNR division chiefs are responsible for implementing approved recommendations.
