Indigenous Peoples Rights

The compartment review process is utilized to identify and protect special or unique areas of interest, including Indigenous Peoples Rights. As part of the compartment review process (see p. 4 of Chapter 7 of the OI manual), all lands under consideration are forwarded to the Environmental Review Coordinator, Michigan Historical Center, 717 West Allegan, Lansing, MI 48918 (also referred to as "SHPO" for State Historic Preservation Office).

Native American tribes receive notification of our open houses and compartment reviews.

Contacts vary by unit, and are available at each unit.

Tribes are welcome to participate in the compartment review process with all other interested publics.

In addition, GIS work has been conducted to assess the probability of archeological sites.
