Public Act 488 of 2002 prohibits the removal of official state historical markers from their designated site without written permission. Anyone caught with a marker in his possession faces up to 93 days in jail and a $5,000 fine, plus the cost of repairing, reinstalling, and/or replacing the marker.
If you know of the location of a missing marker, we encourage you to contact your local police department or to contact the Michigan Historical Commission. A recent e-mail from a history buff told us about the location of a marker formerly listed on this pagethank you!
What do Michigan Historical Markers look like?
The typical marker is either 24" x 36" or 42" x 54" in size, with textual information on one or both sides. It is made of cast aluminum, and features gold letters set on a green background, with a wolverine and the words "Michigan Registered Historic Site" at the top. Less common is the 12" x 14" wall-mounted plaque.
