Special Deer Seasons and Hunts

Special Antlerless Deer Seasons

Firearm antlerless deer hunts will take place in some Lower Peninsula DMUs on the following dates:

  • Early Antlerless Deer Season: September 15 - 19, 2011
  • Late Antlerless Deer Season: December 19, 2011 - January 1, 2012
Refer to the 2011 Early and Late Season Firearm Antlerless Map for the DMUs included in the early and late antlerless deer seasons. Hunters must possess a private-land antlerless deer license issued for the DMU upon which they are hunting, or a Deer Management Assistance (DMA) permit valid for that DMU for the early and late antlerless seasons.

  • Youth Early Antlerless Firearm Hunting Days: September 20 - 23, 2011
The Youth Early Antlerless Firearm season will be open on all lands within DMU 486 with the appropriate public- or private-land antlerless license or Deer Management Assistance (DMA) permit valid for that DMU.

Firearm, combination, archery and junior archery deer licenses are not valid for any of the above seasons. All hunters are required to wear hunter orange and must have permission from the landowner or leaseholder before hunting on private land. The telephone number of the private landowner is required to acquire a private-land antlerless deer license. Also see Firearm Hunting Rules for Youth Deer Hunters.

Youth and 100 Percent Disabled Veteran Firearm Deer Hunting Days

A youth and 100 percent disabled veteran firearm deer hunt will take place on all lands in Michigan Sept. 24-25, 2011. For youth 10-16 years old, and qualified veterans with disabilities, valid licenses include a combination, firearm or antlerless deer license.

During this two-day hunt only, a firearm or combination license may be used for an antlered or antlerless deer. A Deer Management Assistance (DMA) permit may also be used to take one antlerless deer only, if issued for the area/land upon which hunting. Archery and junior archery deer licenses are not valid for this hunt. The bag limit for this season is one deer. Also see Firearm Hunting Rules for Youth Deer Hunters.

A veteran who has been determined to have a 100 percent disability, or is rated as individually unemployable by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, may participate in this hunt. Documentation from the Veterans Administration shall be in the possession of a veteran participating in this hunt.

All hunters are required to wear hunter orange and must have permission from the landowner or leaseholder before hunting on private land. The telephone number of the private landowner is required to acquire a private-land antlerless deer license.

Special Deer Hunts

Fort Custer Training Center
The training center is sponsoring a Freedom Hunt Oct. 14-16 for hunters eligible to participate in the special deer hunt for those with disabilities. Applications can be found at www.fortcusterhunt.org or contact Jonathan Edgerly at jonathan.edgerly@us.army.mil or by phone at 269-731-6570. The application deadline is Oct. 1, 2011.

Hoffmaster State Park
See 2011 Hoffmaster State Park Managed Deer Hunt Information or contact the park office at 231-798-3711 for more details about this park's managed antlerless deer hunt. Hunters must apply by Sept. 9, 2011.

North Manitou Island Hunts
Deer hunt licenses are available for archery from Oct. 1-28, 2011; muzzleloading and regular firearm from Oct. 29-Nov. 6, 2011. There is a $25 application fee. Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge Deer Hunting

Shiawassee River State Game Area Deer Hunting
See 2011 Shiawassee River State Game Area Deer Hunt Information or contact the DNR Field Office (225 E. Spruce Street, St. Charles, MI 48655) at 989-865-6211 for more details. The deadline for application is Aug. 15, 2011.

South Fox Island Deer Hunting
Deer hunting permits are available for South Fox Island during archery season from Oct. 1-28 and/or firearm season from Oct. 29 through Nov. 26. Contact: DNR Operations Service Center, 8015 Mackinaw Trail, Cadillac, MI 49601; 231-775-9727.
