Angler input sought on various fisheries throughout Michigan

Starting this spring, the DNR is conducting angler surveys in various locations throughout Michigan. For more information and details, see each respective survey below.

Participation in these survey efforts is key to proper fisheries management.

Upper Peninsula brook trout surveys
Select rivers across the Upper Peninsula will be part of an angler survey effort starting this spring. The survey is designed to evaluate public response and potential biological effects of an experimental regulation that allows an additional five brook trout to be harvested in specified research areas. Survey information on angler opinions and catch rates will be used to improve future brook trout management in the U.P.

Originally announced in November, the experimental regulation went into effect on April 1, 2013, and applies to segments of the Dead River (Marquette County), Driggs River (Schoolcraft County), East Branch Ontonagon River (Houghton and Iron counties), East Branch Tahquamenon River (Chippewa County) and East Branch Huron River (Baraga and Marquette counties). The regulation's upstream/downstream boundaries on these rivers are described on pages 52 through 66 of the 2013 Michigan Fishing Guide and are depicted as online maps at the link provided below.

Angler input is being sought through survey cards are available on site at each location and through an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/brooktroutanglersurvey.

To learn more about this experimental regulation, check out information available online. If you have questions and/or comments you can also email DNR-FISH-Brooktrout@michigan.gov.

This survey will run from April 27, 2013 until September 30, 2013.

Eastern Upper Peninsula
Blind Sucker Flooding and Bodi Lake in Luce County and the Tahquamenon River in Chippewa and Luce counties will be part of angler survey efforts this spring. These surveys look to evaluate fishing efforts and angler attitudes and values regarding the fisheries of these water bodies.

Angler input is being sought through survey cards are available on site at each location and through online surveys, available for all three locations:

These surveys are being conducted by the Fisheries Division's Eastern Lake Superior Management Unit.

The Blind Sucker Flooding and Bodi Lake surveys are focused on northern pike fisheries with questions pertaining to type of bait used, number of days anglers fish for northern pike at each location, and how anglers rank the northern pike fishery. The Tahquamenon River survey is focused on various fisheries and includes questions about types of bait used, number of days anglers fish for brown trout, walleye, muskellunge and smallmouth bass on the Tahquamenon River, and angler's preference for either catch-and-release or catch-and-keep fishing.

This survey will run from May 1, 2013 until October 31, 2013.

Lake George in Ogemaw County
Lake George in Ogemaw County will be part of an angler survey effort this spring. The survey looks to evaluate various fisheries on this water body.

Angler input is being sought through survey cards are available on site at each location and through an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/lakegeorgesurvey.

This survey is being conducted by the Fisheries Division's Southern Lake Huron Management Unit.

Questions on the survey include type of fishing method used, number of days anglers fish Lake George in a calendar year, and specifics of the day's catch.

Marl Lake in Mecosta County
Marl Lake in Mecosta County will be part of an angler survey effort this spring. The survey looks to evaluate various fisheries on this water body.

Angler input is being sought through survey cards are available on site at each location and through an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/marllakesurvey.

This survey is also being conducted by the Fisheries Division's Southern Lake Huron Management Unit.

Questions on the survey include type of fishing method used, number of days anglers fish Marl Lake in a calendar year, and specifics of the day's catch.
