Invasive Carp

Bighead Carp - Not currently detected in Michigan waters

  • Can weigh up to 90 lbs and be nearly 5 feet in length
  • Can consume up to 40% of their body weight daily
  • Have a very large head and toothless mouth
  • Adult fish are dark gray with dark blotches
  • Eyes sit below the mouth

Silver Carp - Not currently detected in Michigan waters

  • Are smaller than the bighead
  • Can weigh up to 60 lbs and exceed 3 feet in length
  • Are light silver in color with a white belly
  • Eyes sit below the mouth

Grass carp - Present in low densities in Lake Erie

  • Can be more than 5 feet long and weigh more than 80 lbs
  • Have large scales that appear crosshatched
  • Eyes sit even with the mouth

Black Carp - Not currently detected in Michigan waters

  • Can be more than 6 feet long and weigh more than 150 lbs
  • Blackish-brown scales grading to bluish gray to almost white belly
  • Pointed head with a flattened anterior portion
