Use of modified ORVs (snow bikes) on snowmobile trails
There have been a number of public inquiries regarding the use of modified ORVs (ie. removing tires and replacing them with tracks to better operate on snow and ice) on snowmobile trails. The DNR has examined this issue and has announced that if a motorized vehicle is manufactured and titled as an ORV - it is considered an ORV – it must be registered and permitted accordingly, even if it is modified to travel on snow and ice.
- Modified ORVs are not allowed on designated snowmobile-only trails. Modified ORVs are permitted to operate on the mixed motorized trails.
- If a motorized vehicle is originally manufactured as an ORV, it remains an ORV despite any modifications. This includes ORVs with the snow bike kits installed.
