Baraga State Park Offers New Tepee

The Kitchigami Tepee, with a view of Lake Superior's Keweenaw Bay, is available for Baraga State Park Tepeenightly rentals at Baraga State Park.

The first family to stay in the tepee was the Strei Family of Elk River, Minnesota, pictured to the left.

"Kitchigami" meaning "great water" or "great lake" is a name taken from the Ojibway Language Dictionary written by Bishop Frederic Baraga. This dwelling offers visitors a chance to learn about and experience the Ojibwa culture and traditions. The tepee is decorated with a pattern called "Big Lakes" in honor of "Otchipwe Kitchigami" or Lake Superior in the Ojibway language.

The tepee which is 16 feet around and will sleep 4-6 persons. It contains four cots and the exterior includes a picnic table and fire ring. Baraga State Park TepeeAccess to the modern restroom facilities is also available.

The tepee rents for $30 a night and can be reserved by calling 1-800-44-PARKS or online by clicking here.
