Pinckney Recreation Area--Southern Michigan Orienteering Club O-Meet at Halfmoon LakeDate: May 05, 2013 Time: 12:00 PM - 03:00 PM Location: Pinckney Recreation Area, 8555 Silver Hill Road, Pinckney, MI, 48169
Orienteering is a sport that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain. Participants are given a map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points.
At a standard O-meet, participants must visit each control point on the course in the order indicated. The winner for each course is the person who successfully visits each control point on the course in the shortest time. There are courses for all skill levels.
You have three hours to complete your course, so you may want to begin closer to noon. To avoid an unnecessary search and rescue operation, you must check in with the Meet Director after you come back even if you did not finish your course!
Free instruction is available at all meets, just ask when you sign in. You may rent a compass for a nominal fee with collateral. Detailed topographic maps are available at each meet.
