Frequently Asked Questions about the Gas Savings Camper Storage Program

Intent of Program: To provide the opportunity for loyal state park or recreation area campers to leave their camping units (camping trailer, motor home or boat on trailer) at state park or recreation area locations as an alternative to towing or driving the unit home between state park visits.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. What items can be stored at the park?   The only items eligible to be stored are towed camping units, self propelled motor homes or boats on a boat trailer.  Units being stored must be secured by locking all entry doors and the hitch must be disabled by a locking mechanism.

  1. How long can items be stored?     Maximum allowable storage period is 15 days.

  1. Is there a fee for this program?   No.  The storage program is free of charge.

  1. What happens if I cannot retrieve my unit on the 16th day?   Units left more than 15 days will be assessed a $4.00/day storage fee.  Camp unit owner may also be denied the opportunity to store their camping unit in the future if the 15 day storage limit is exceeded.  Camp units left beyond 30 days may be deemed "abandoned property" and submitted to state auction for disposal.  Camper must contact the park if circumstances arise that will result in the camp unit being left more than 15 days.

  1. Who is eligible for the storage program?   Camper must show proof (camp permit receipt or reservation confirmation number) of campground use at any Michigan State Park or Recreation Area within the seven days prior to the beginning of the storage period.

  1. When is this service available?   May 15 to September 15 only.  (Please note: Due to success of the storage program, the original end date of September 15 has been changed to allow storage through the end of the camping season at each of the storage locations.)

  1. Where in the park will units be stored?   The storage area will be a designated park location, which most likely is unfenced, but, generally supervised by park staff.   No guarantee of site supervision is provided.   Camping units/trailers will not be stored on campsites.

  1. Who places my unit in storage?   The unit owner.

  1. Who is liable for the safety and security of items stored?  Units are stored at the owners' risk.  The participant must sign a liability/conditions waiver agreement form at the time of equipment storage.  The state assumes no responsibility for damage/loss experienced as a result of this program.  The camper assumes liability for any damages to state property or other camp units being stored in the area caused during the process of dropping off or picking up the camping unit.

  1. Can I reserve a storage space?   No, storage spaces are available only on a first come, first served basis.  Spaces available can be determined only by contacting the park; the park cannot reserve or hold a storage space.

  1. Which state park or recreation areas offer the storage program? See the link Park and Recreation Area Locations in the Gas Saving Storage Program
