FAQ
Quick Facts
Can I buy a daily resident pass?

No, daily passes are only available for nonresidents ($9). The $11 resident Recreation Passport grants access to Michigan's woods and waters for pennies a day when you purchase it through the Secretary of State.

How is the Recreation Passport displayed?
  • If bought through the Secretary of State: It's displayed as two small "P's" at the top and bottom of your license plate tab and the words "RECREATION PASSPORT" will also be printed at the top of your vehicle registration.

  • If bought at a state park: It's a window sticker, and should be placed on the inside, lower right side of the passenger window.
How much does the Recreation Passport cost?
  • $11 - Michigan registered vehicles (exemptions listed below under "Specialty vehicles")
  • $5 - Michigan registered motorcycles
  • $32 - Non-Michigan annual pass
  • $9 - Non-Michigan daily pass

"Non-resident" means that your vehicle is registered in another state or province and it is not based on the driver's residency. This means that if a Michigan resident is driving a rental vehicle or someone else's vehicle with an out-of-state license plate, they'll need a nonresident daily or nonresident annual window sticker.

How and where do I purchase the Recreation Passport?

Michigan registered vehicles

  • Check "Yes!" when you renew your license plate through the Secretary of State online at www.expresssos.com, by mail, kiosk or branch office.
  • If you didn't check yes at the SOS during license plate renewal, bring your vehicle registration to a Secretary of State branch office to pay $11 ($5 for motorcycles) and receive a replacement license plate sticker with the Recreation Passport proof of purchase.
  • Purchase a window sticker at a Michigan state park or at a customer service center.

Purchasing the Recreation Passport at any time other than during your license plate renewal will be more expensive in future years and currently excludes you from taking advantage of the statewide Passport Perks shopping discount program. It also means you don't get a full year of access to Michigan's woods and waters, because however the Recreation Passport is purchased, it's only good until your next license plate renewal date. The most cost-effective option is to purchase the Recreation Passport when you renew your vehicle license plate tab, which ensures you can access Michigan's woods and waters year-round.

Non-Michigan registered vehicles

When does my Recreation Passport expire?
  • Michigan registered vehicles: Good until your next license plate registration renewal date (this expiration applies to both license plate tabs and window stickers). Check yes to the Recreation Passport during license plate renewal for a full year of access! For vehicles that are not annually renewed, you can purchase a window sticker each year at a state park or customer service center.
  • Non-Michigan registered vehicles: Good through December 31 of the calendar year in which it was purchased.
