Ham creek bridgeThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced today that the Ham Creek bridge has been fully replaced and has reopened to all trail users. The bridge services the North Missaukee ORV route and Snowmobile Trail No. 6 in northwest Missaukee County.

The former bridge was deteriorating and no longer deemed safe. The new bridge will provide both ORV and snowmobile riders with an upgraded riding experience allowing users to ride designated trails instead of the shoulder of county roads.

The ORV Trail Improvement Fund, which is generated through the sale of ORV licenses and permits, was used for the bridge project. ORV Trail Improvement Fund dollars are reinvested back into the ORV system and help fund trail expansion, maintenance and infrastructure improvements.

DNR seeks information on vandalism to new structure

Although the Ham Creek bridge replacement project had been completed, the DNR discovered May 19, 2017, that portions of the new bridge were damaged from a fire that was started along the new railing and decking. While the damage is not severe enough to close the bridge, the damaged portions of the bridge eventually will need to be replaced.

Anyone with information on the cause of the fire is encouraged to call or text the Report All Poaching (RAP) line at 800-292-7800. The RAP line is a convenient, effective way for citizens to report damage to Michigan's natural resources or the illegal taking of fish or game. The line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Citizens can remain anonymous.

"The Ham Creek bridge replacement project has completed and it will be a nice addition to the ORV and snowmobile trail system," said Todd Neiss, DNR trails specialist. "Unfortunately it appears someone tried to start the bridge on fire and has caused minor damage to the railing system and a couple of the bridge deck boards. We urge that anyone with information to please report it to the DNR."Ham creek bridge damage by fire
