    Outdoor Explorer's Kit

    Ready to head outdoors! Here is a suggested exploring kit that you and your parents can put together to help you really enjoy yourself! This kit should provide everything you need for up to a half day.

    Small Day pack (or if school is out for the summer use your old school back pack)

    • Water bottle
    • Hand lens/magnifying glass
    • Zippered sandwich bags (for keeping those neat discoveries)
    • Small trash bags (to help pick up trash)(They also make excellent emergency rain ponchos)
    • Journal (for notes, drawings, observations, or special thoughts)
    • Two writing instruments (in case one gets lost or broken)
    • Tissue
    • Wet wipes
    • Snacks
      • Hard candy
      • Trail mix (see recipes)
      • Granola bars (Don't take chocolate bars! They melt and make a mess!)
    • First-aid kit
      • Individual anti-septic wipes
      • Band aids

    Suggested extras
    • Binoculars
    • Digital Camera (help reduce waste by not using disposable cameras)

    Trail mix recipes:
    Regular
    In a bowl combine ¼ cup of any of the following items:

    • Unsalted mixed nuts, peanuts, cashews, or almonds
    • Sunflower seeds
    • Dried cranberries
    • Dried cherries
    • Dried apricots
    • Raisins
    • Mini chocolate chips
    • Mini pretzels
    • Multi grain Cheerios
    • Whole wheat Chex cereal
    • Granola

    No nuts
    In a bowl combine ¼ cup of the following items:

    • Mini kisses covered in coating
    • Cheerios
    • Raisins
    • Crispix cereal
    • Mini Marshmallows
    • Pretzel Sticks

    Go Nuts!
    The fun thing with trail mix is that there is no right or wrong recipe. Invent your own mix. Share it with friends in the out doors of course!
