Frequently Asked Questions About the Wildlife Division Strategic Plan

What is a Strategic Plan?
A strategic plan outlines measurable goals, objectives and desired outcomes for the long-term and effective management of resources. A strategic plan guides organizations in becoming a more proactive, effective and cost-efficient agency; describes major priorities for future efforts; and details how to address these priorities through enhanced engagement with the public and other affected stakeholders. A strategic plan for the Wildlife Division will be complimentary to other department (e.g., state forest plan) and division (e.g., deer management plan, bear management plan) planning efforts already completed and being implemented.

Why does the DNRE Wildlife Division need a plan?
The Wildlife Division is facing major challenges in staffing, funding and a changing departmental organizational structure. Staffing levels have decreased significantly over the last 20 years, and our responsibilities continue to increase. Wildlife management is changing due to urbanization, threats from climate change and invasive species, and funding challenges. Since the division is entrusted with managing wildlife resources for the public good, the plan will provide a strong foundation to help us respond to the many challenges facing wildlife in the future.

How will the plan be used?
The plan will set future direction and prioritize the most important issues we need to address. The plan will provide clear, concise and well-reasoned priorities that link directly to our day-to-day work. This will help the Wildlife Division focus on what is most important, resulting in cost-effective and efficient delivery of our programs. The plan will also communicate to stakeholders and the public what the division management goals are and how they will be achieved.

What process are you using to create the plan?
The Wildlife Division is working hard to engage all who have a stake in our state's future. A number of steps have been completed, including internal input, focus groups, development of issue papers and surveys.

How long will it take to be completed?
Implementation of the plan will begin in the fall of 2010.
