Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve

Located at Alpena, Thunder Bay NMSUP protects one of the nation's best preserved and historically significant collections of shipwrecks. The 448-square-mile site, the only freshwater national marine sanctuary in the U.S., is jointly managed by the Michigan Historical Center and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

2009 Management Plan PDF icon The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary's 2009 management plan was prepared by NOAA and the State of Michigan in cooperation with the Thunder Bay Sanctuary Advisory Council and with input from the public, local governments, state and federal agencies, and other stakeholders.
