Our new special exhibit is a celebration and investigation of the creative process. Put It On Paper shows you authentic examples of the process in the work of authors, artists, illustrators, architects, musicians and engineers. The artifacts on exhibit include:

• Ernest Hemingway's first story, "Sportsman's Hash," written in northern Michigan on his father's stationery
• original manuscripts by Laura Ingalls Wilder, donated by the Little House author to a Detroit library
• drawings of the World Trade Center by WTC architect Minoru Yamasaki, who lived and worked in the Detroit area
• manuscripts of the book Anatomy of a Murder by Ishpeming native John Voelker, which was adapted into a 1959 Academy Award-nominated film of the same title

Put It On Paper isn't just about someone else's creative process. No matter your age, you're invited to work out your own creativity through drawing, sketching, coloring and building your own ideas in the exhibit's creative center. In addition, our "build a garden bed" activity invites and challenges you to design a garden bed sign on graph paper and then lay it out with flowers in our scale model garden bed—just like one of the artists featured in the exhibit.

The Michigan Historical Museum—flagship of the Michigan Historical Museum System—is located inside the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing. The museum and visitor parking are on the north side of Kalamazoo Street, two blocks east of M. L. King Jr. Boulevard. Sunday admission and weekend parking are free.
