Known more widely as the Chicago World's Fair, the 1893 Columbian Exposition was an international celebration marking Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage to the Americas. The state of Michigan was there, offering exhibits on agriculture, logging and mining. Michiganians were there, too, as visitors, and brought back souvenirs, like this painted fan showing the fairgrounds. We've created a new mini exhibit featuring other Columbian Exposition artifacts in our museum collections, including a souvenir light bulb brought back safely by a farmer to his southwest Michigan home. In the second-floor atrium.

This exhibit is included with museum admission. For more information, send us an e-mail or telephone (517) 373-3559.

The Michigan Historical Museum—flagship of the Michigan Historical Museum System—is located inside the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing. The museum and visitor parking are on the north side of Kalamazoo Street, two blocks east of M. L. King Jr. Boulevard. Sunday admission and weekend parking are free. Here's more information on how to find us.
