Michigan Modern: The Abridged Story

We've partnered with the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office to present a mini exhibit celebrating Michigan's mid-20th-century design heritage.
After World War II, Michigan played an instrumental role in the development of the Modern Movement. Furniture companies like Zeeland-based Herman Miller and architects like Troy-based Minoru Yamasaki (who later gained international fame for designing the World Trade Center in New York City) helped Michigan become the postwar design center of the nation.
The exhibit includes a colorful architectural time line, a sample drafting board, miniatures of iconic modern furniture, and historic photographs of significant people, buildings and furniture.

The Michigan Historical Museum—flagship of the Michigan
Historical Museum System—is located inside the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing. The museum and visitor parking are on the north side of Kalamazoo Street, two blocks east of M. L. King Jr. Boulevard. Sunday admission and weekend parking are free.
