• Nominations being accepted for Governor John B. Swainson Award The Michigan Historical Commission today announced it is accepting nominations for the Governor John B. Swainson Award. The prestigious Swainson Award is given annually by the Michigan Historical Commission to state, county or municipal employees who have gone above and beyond their official job duties to help preserve Michigan's history.

• Michigan Historical Commission approves two new historical markers New Michigan State Historical Markers for the Ford Building in downtown Detroit and a famous Civil War cavalry unit were approved by the Michigan Historical Commission at its Dec. 6 meeting.

• Michigan Historical Commission approves 11 new historical markers A rare type of bridge built by a master engineer, the site of a one-room schoolhouse founded by a former slave and his wife, and a lighthouse tower built 135 years ago are among the subjects of 11 new Michigan State Historical Markers approved by the Michigan Historical Commission at its Sept. 20 meeting.

• Michigan Historical Commission elects new officers During its recent annual meeting, the Michigan Historical Commission elected new officers for the 2012-2013 year. Commissioner Jack Dempsey of Plymouth was elected president; Commissioner Kimberly Johnson of Pontiac was elected as vice president.
