If your refrigerator is 10 years old or older, it uses as much energy as two of today's ENERGY STAR refrigerators. A new refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR label will save you between $35 and $70 a year compared to a 1986 model, depending on the type of refrigerator and the cost of electricity in your area. New ENERGY STAR clothes washers have savings of more than 35% on water and more than 55% on energy. The washing action of ENERGY STAR clothes washers is gentle enough to handle even delicate washables. An ENERGY STAR home will use 45% less energy than a typical new home built in Michigan.

The Home Improvement Toolbox consists of a suite of tools homeowners can use to benchmark the efficiency of their home, receive customized recommendations for home improvement projects, learn how to include ENERGY STAR labeled products when remodeling, and solve energy-wasting household problems such as drafty rooms and cold floors. www.energystar.gov/homeimprovement
