Ergonomic Principles

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program is designed to provide a basic understanding of ergonomics and the implementation of a successful ergonomics program.  Building on the definition of fundamental concepts, this seminar will identify ergonomic disorders and risk factors.  Various control measures will be reviewed.  The importance for building a case for implementing an ergonomics program and the elements of an ergonomics program will also be covered.  A discussion of MIOSHA’s enforcement strategy and draft ergonomics standard will be presented.  Ergonomic risk factor identification will be emphasized through a video and class exercise.  Another class exercise will present methods for analyzing workplace records to establish the need for implementing an ergonomics program.  Attendees will be provided with a variety of ergonomic resources.

Industrial Laser Safety

Industrial Robot Safety

COURSE DESCRIPTION

More and more manufacturing entities are utilizing industrial robots due to the precision and consistency they bring to dangerous, dirty, boring, heavy, and repetitive tasks in the workplace. Robots allow workers to focus more on the quality and quantity of parts required for today’s production needs. Although there are no specific MIOSHA standards for robots, the employer is still required to provide proper guarding to protect employees from the hazardous movements of the robots during normal production tasks performed by the employees.

This seminar will discuss the history, use and emerging technology specific to industrial use of robots. Discussion will focus on the “how to” of robotic assessment and guarding strategies as required under MIOSHA compliance standards applicable to the safe use of robots in industrial settings where employees are required to interact with robots to do programs, set ups, and operations for production.

MIOSHA Recordkeeping and Cost of Injuries

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This MIOSHA program is designed to help employers ensure that their organization complies with MIOSHA recordkeeping requirements as contained in MIOSHA Administrative Rules Part 11, Recording and Reporting of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses.  In addition to learning and understanding the “recordability” of work related injuries and illnesses, attendees will actively participate in a group exercise to complete the Injury and Illness OSHA Log 300.  Using this data, participants will calculate injury and illness rates and learn how to compare these rates to other companies with their North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS).  Participants will also hear from a representative from the Michigan Economic Growth Corporation on how their service can help control Worker’s Compensation.

This course covers the training and operating requirements for powered industrial trucks in general industry workplaces. Safety topics include training program implementation, operator selection, training, testing and permitting inspection procedures, work safety practices, retention of training and maintenance records, and identification of types of powered industrial trucks. Occupational health topics include information on carbon monoxide, ventilation controls, personal protective equipment, and emergency eye flush and shower facilities. This seminar is designed to give participants an understanding of the requirements of MIOSHA’s, Part 380. Occupational Noise Exposure.  Topics covered include: definition of noise; hearing loss and how it can occur; requirements of Part 380: learning PNE and AL for noise; determining when and why to conduct noise monitoring; determining when a Standard Threshold Shift (STS) occurs and when to record it on the 300 log, noise training requirements, noise control technologies  and how to select proper hearing protection.  Participants will have “hands-on” opportunities to use noise dosimeters/sound level meters and calibrators and assess noise levels associated with actual noise sources.

This course primarily focuses on the proper application and interpretation of 1910.146, Permit Required Confined Spaces is the primary objective of this course.  Photographs of actual spaces will be used to help understand the definition and identification of confined and permit required confined spaces.  Three means of entering a permit space are described by 1910.146; these entry procedures will be discussed along with their correct implementation.  Important principles of air monitoring and ventilation will be discussed and actual case studies will be used to illustrate important concepts.

This course is designed to provide the learner with an understanding of the requirements of the MIOSHA Hazard Communication Standards for Construction Safety and Health, General Industry Safety, and Occupational Health, (Parts 42, 92, and 430) as well as Right-To-Know Requirements in Act 154.  After taking this class participants will be able to evaluate an existing hazard communication program and/or create and implement a hazard communication program for a workplace that does not have one.  The goal of the class will be to protect employees by increasing employer compliance with the requirements of this standard.  The class will also explain how, when, and why MIOSHA issues a citation for a violation of these standards.

MIOSHA’s instruction on the Application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Standards (MIOSHA-STD-08-1) will also be addressed.  The course will cover methods for conducting and documenting hazard surveys, PPE selection and maintenance criteria, and PPE training requirements.  Sample PPE photos and/or scenarios will be included and discussed in the program and tools for PPE hazard surveys will be provided for assistance with conducting and documenting hazard surveys in the workplaces.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This seminar is an overview of topics covered in greater detail in the MIOSHA General Industry
10-Hour +.  This seminar is designed for both general industry and construction safety first line supervision, safety and health committee members, and management personnel.  Topics covered include employee safety and health training, accident investigation, hazard recognition, and
self-inspection techniques.  This program gives tips to supervision on methods to integrate health and safety into their daily duties and responsibilities.  Using MIOSHA general industry and construction standards and required written programs as a baseline, supervisors are given suggestions to improve their safety and health hazard recognition skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Attendees from both the construction and general industry sector will gain an insight of the process and procedures a MIOSHA compliance officer follows while conducting a workplace inspection and how to respond to MIOSHA citations. Topics covered include inspection types, employer/employee rights and responsibilities, and penalty reduction factors. This program will assist students in preparing for an inspection and students will work through a sample citation. Students will be provided with hands-on exercises to reinforce the principles that are discussed in the course.
