On May 19, 2010, MIOSHA participated in the annual Safety Patrol Picnic in Lansing. The picnic is sponsored by the Lansing Area Safety Council as a “thank you” for those elementary school children who serve as safety patrollers during the school year. Between 2,000 and 3,000 students - primarily in the fourth and fifth grade - participate in the picnic. MIOSHA staff used community leave to volunteer their time to be a part of the event, talking with kids about the need to work safe, asking them to share the message to work safe with their parents, and thanking them for their work to keep students safe on their way to and from school. The Michigan State University paper, The State News, took pictures and video of our MIOSHA group applying “Work Safe…Be Safe!” temporary tattoos to kids. There are two articles and a video that includes MIOSHA at: http://35.8.12.17/index.php/multimedia/38841. It was a lot of fun! Thanks to MIOSHA volunteers: Katie Benghauser, Sue Becker, Patti Brace, Jodi Meddaugh, Connie O’Neill, Staci Smith, Conni Thelen, Elaine Wever, and Martha Yoder. And we also want to thank Dawn Jack, Appeals Director, who attended the event with her daughter and also provided assistance at the MIOSHA booth.
