COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program is designed to provide a basic understanding of ergonomics and the implementation of a successful ergonomics program.  Upon defining some key terminology and discussing some background information, this seminar will then identify common ergonomic disorders and primary risk factors.  The importance for building a case for implementing an ergonomics program and the elements of an ergonomics program will also be covered.  A discussion of MIOSHA’s enforcement strategy will be presented.  Ergonomic risk factor identification will be emphasized through use of a video and a class exercise.  Another class exercise will present methods for analyzing workplace records to establish the need for implementing an ergonomics program.  Attendees will also be provided with a variety of ergonomic resources.

Industrial Laser Safety

Currently no MIOSHA standards exists regulating industrial laser use besides the duty of employers to protect their employees from the possibility of injury or illness.  This class is designed to provide Michigan employers with a basic understanding of the requirements they will need to meet in order to protect their employees and eliminate laser safety and health hazards.  This class will review the safety and health hazards commonly associated with industrial laser applications and usage, classifications, nominal hazard zones, laser officer responsibilities, training and guarding, MIOSHA compliance requirements, and other applicable consensus standards.

Industrial Robot Safety

More and more manufacturing entities are utilizing industrial robots due to the precision and consistency they bring to dangerous, dirty, boring, heavy, and repetitive tasks in the workplace. Robots allow workers to focus more on the quality and quantity of parts required for today’s production needs. Although there are no specific MIOSHA standards for robots, the employer is still required to provide proper guarding to protect employees from the hazardous movements of the robots during normal production tasks performed by the employees.

This seminar will discuss the history, use and emerging technology specific to industrial use of robots. Discussion will focus on the “how to” of robotic assessment and guarding strategies as required under MIOSHA compliance standards applicable to the safe use of robots in industrial settings where employees are required to interact with robots to do programs, set ups, and operations for production.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This MIOSHA program is designed to help employers ensure that their organization complies with MIOSHA recordkeeping requirements as contained in MIOSHA Administrative Rules Part 11, Recording and Reporting of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses.  In addition to learning and understanding the “recordability” of work related injuries and illnesses, attendees will actively participate in a group exercise to complete the MIOSHA 300 log.  Using this data, participants calculate injury and illness rates and learn how to compare these rates to other companies with their North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS).  There will also be a segment devoted to identifying possible cost savings in a company’s workers’ compensation program.

Part 2 – Floor and Wall Openings, Stairways, and Skylights is intended to provide information regarding safety in all places of employment where there is a danger of persons falling from, into, or through walking or working surfaces, vats, or skylights or while gaining access to other elevations, or if hazards from materials falling from walking or working surfaces exists.  Part 3 – Fixed Ladders will provide an understanding of safety by establishing minimum standards for the design and installation, maintenance, and use of fixed ladders used by employees.  Part 4 – Portable Ladders establishes minimum requirements for the construction, care, and use of portable ladders used in, around, or about places of employment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will provide the participant an overview of MIOSHA personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements contained in MIOSHA General Industry Parts 33 and 433, as well as MIOSHA Construction Part 6, PPE requirements for other MIOSHA standards and MIOSHA’s instruction on the Application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Standards (MIOSHA-STD-08-1) will also be addressed.  Methods for conducting and documenting hazard surveys, PPE selection and maintenance criteria, and PPE training requirements are described.  Sample PPE photos and scenarios will be included and discussed in the program.  Tools for PPE hazard surveys will be provided to assist students in conducting and documenting hazard surveys in the workplace.

Bloodborne infectious diseases are identified as being a significant source of injury and illnesses.  Currently there is variation in the enforcement of these standards.  Citations for similar deficiencies vary and this lack of consistency leads to confusion among facilities attempting to comply with the standards.  This full-day course was developed to provide new enforcement personnel with the training and tools they will use to audit facility compliance with Parts 554 and 472.  In addition this course is offered to the general public to give them the opportunity to learn the way these standards are enforced by MIOSHA.
