WHITE LAKE, Mich. – Mr. Chris McAuliffe, a teacher at Oxbow Community School, Huron Valley Schools, received news today of a $25,000 cash award – no strings attached – during a visit to the school from State Superintendent Tom Watkins as part of the Milken Family Foundation’s Educator Awards Program.
“Chris McAuliffe is a great teacher. He makes a significant difference in the lives and futures of students,” Watkins said. “This marks the 15th year of recognizing excellence in education with the Milken Family Foundation. We are thrilled to acknowledge the dedication and vision that Mr. McAuliffe brings to his profession.”
McAuliffe is one of only 100 teachers nationwide this year to receive the Milken National Educator Award, dubbed the “Oscars of Teaching” by Teacher Magazine.
“By choosing to practice in the most noble and important profession, our nation’s talented educators make a lasting contribution to young people’s minds, imaginations, and characters.” said Milken Family Foundation chair and co-founder Lowell Milken. “We are proud to honor the outstanding work of teachers like Chris McAuliffe, providing them with the recognition they so richly deserve.”
McAuliffe, a fifth grade science teacher, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spring Arbor University and a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. McAuliffe inspires the entire student body and his colleagues. Science achievement test scores have improved during McAuliffe’s tenure at Oxbow.
“Chris McAuliffe is one of the best and brightest of many “stars” in the rapidly improved Huron Valley Schools. Chris is a great teacher and mentor for our young people and an even better human being,” said Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Robert O’Brien.
