Straus Vows Thoroughness and Diligence In Board's Selection of Next Superintendent

Contact:  Martin Ackley, Public Information Officer 517.241.4395
Agency: Education

April 15, 2005

LANSING - The Michigan State Board of Education has received 29 applications for the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Of the 29 candidates, 17 requested confidentiality during the first round of the selection process. The State Board has scheduled a Special Meeting on May 9, when it is expected that the field of candidates will be narrowed to a list of finalists.

“We have some quality people who have applied to be the next State Superintendent,” said State Board President Kathleen N. Straus. “This is an extremely important position and the State Board will be thorough and diligent in selecting the person who best meets the criteria approved by the Board and the Governor.”

The State Board will develop a list of initial questions that will be sent to every candidate for their written responses. Those questions will be sent out by the State Board office on or before April 19 and candidates must return their responses on or before May 3. The written responses will assist the State Board in their narrowing down of the field of candidates. A separate set of questions will be developed by the State Board for the public interviews of the finalists.

Confidentiality will be honored for the 17 applicants wishing to remain anonymous until a group of finalists is named. Once selected as a finalist by the State Board, any finalists requesting confidentiality will be notified prior to their names being released publicly. All interviews will be held at public meetings.

Here is a list of the 12 candidates for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in alphabetical order, who did not request confidentiality:
