Heidi Capraro, Michigan’s 2004-05 Teacher of the Year, was honored this week in Washington, D.C., along with Teachers of the Year from across the nation. The experience culminated Wednesday with a visit to the White House to meet President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.
Capraro, a sixth grade science teacher at Hillside Middle School in Northville with more than 14 years of classroom experience, was selected as Michigan Teacher of the Year last May. She has since served on staff at the Michigan Department of Education, visiting schools and sharing promising practices with teachers across the state. Capraro also has a non-voting seat at the State Board of Education table each month.
"It was such a privilege to represent the teachers of Michigan in our nation’s capital and with the President and First Lady,” Capraro said. “Michigan teachers are dedicated and caring professionals who are committed to ensuring the success of all children.”
Capraro holds a Master of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University. She also has completed graduate work in guidance and counseling. Capraro was a 2002 recipient of the national Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.
She is a member of the National Middle Level Science Teachers Association, the Michigan Science Teachers Association, the Metropolitan Detroit Science Teachers Association and has served as Science Department Chairperson for Hillside Middle
School. She is the President-elect of the National Middle Level Science Teachers Association.
The national Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and Scholastic Inc. The program focuses public attention on teaching excellence and is the oldest and most prestigious awards program for teachers.
