LANSING - The week of May 3-7, 2010, is National Teacher Appreciation Week.
In its resolution supporting National Teacher Appreciation Week, the State Board of Education noted that: "Throughout Michigan and across the country, dedicated teachers open children's minds to new knowledge, ideas, abilities, and aspirations.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan and the State Board of Education have continually supported teachers with several quality initiatives, including National Board Certification, the Michigan Teacher of the Year Program, Michigan Network of Excellent Educators, and the Milken National Educator Award.
"Teachers promote and strengthen the principles of democratic equality, keeping American democracy and civic engagement vibrant, and developing leaders to meet new challenges," according to State Board of Education President Kathleen N. Straus.
"Accomplished teachers in Michigan are central to our mission of preserving and enhancing Michigan's natural and human resources and investments," said Flanagan. "Teaching is an increasingly complex profession, and teachers fill many roles as motivators, researchers, mentors, scholars and exemplars."
The Michigan Department of Education encourages schools and communities to recognize the vital and changing role of teachers in imagining and creating a better future for the citizens of Michigan.
