LANSING -- Michigan libraries are gearing up to provide plenty of incentives for children and teens across the State of Michigan to keep reading during the summer months.
The annual Summer Reading Program is in full swing and going through the summer with activities, events and celebrations related to the 2010 reading program theme of water. The Library of Michigan has teamed up with 48 other states in the national Collaborative Summer Library Program <http://www.cslpreads.org/> to share materials, artwork, and programming ideas.
The collaborative allows each public library in the state to focus on working with children and teens to improve their reading ability and enjoyment of books. The program includes slogans based on the theme for children, teens, and for the second year in a row, adults.
The 2010 slogans are:
- Children's slogan: Make a Splash: Read!
- Teen slogan: Make Waves at Your Library: Read!
- Adult slogan: Water Your Mind: Read!
Last year, Michigan libraries reached over 100,000 children and teens through summer reading programs and are on track to reach even more this year.
"Through this outreach, Michigan's public libraries encourage the children, youth and families of our communities to read," said State Librarian Nancy Robertson. "This effort helps children maintain reading skills over the summer break and enter school ready to succeed in the fall."
