Bernero, Calley to Share Gubernatorial Education Platforms with State Board

Contact:  Martin Ackley, Director of Communications 517.241.4395
Agency: Education

LANSING - Democratic candidate for Governor Virg Bernero and Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley will address the State Board of Education at its monthly public meeting Tuesday, October 12.

The State Board invited both Bernero and Republican candidate for Governor Rick Snyder to share their education platforms for Michigan. Bernero will address the State Board at 3:30 p.m. and Calley will represent Snyder at 2:30 p.m.

In fulfilling its constitutional responsibility to "provide leadership and general supervision over all public education," the State Board adopted earlier this year a comprehensive, balanced and bi-partisan plan to reform, restructure and finance Michigan's education system, from early childhood education to post-secondary.

The plan, Recommendations to Better Support Michigan's Education System: Reforms, Restructuring and Revenues is a balance of broad education restructuring initiatives, as well as continued cost reductions and revenue increases.

"We are pleased to offer both campaigns this opportunity to share their visions for the education of Michigan's children," said State Board President Kathleen N. Straus. "We are eager to hear their ideas on how to improve Michigan's schools, and invite their comments on the State Board's plan."

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan, who chairs the State Board meetings, explained that each candidate will have 20 minutes to express their ideas, goals, and visions on education with the State Board.  Board members then may choose to ask each candidate questions.

"This has never been done, to my knowledge," Flanagan said of gubernatorial candidates addressing the State Board of Education, "but education is such a vital component for the revival and survival of Michigan, and the public needs to know each candidate's vision and plans for public education."

The State Board meets at 9:30 a.m. in the Ladislaus B. Dombrowski Board Room located on the fourth floor of the John A. Hannah Building, 608 West Allegan, Lansing.
