LANSING - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan made the following statement on the stepping down of State Board of Education member Reginald Turner and the appointment by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm of Daniel Varner of Detroit to the State Board:
"Reggie Turner was a strong voice for student equity and high standards," said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan. "His insights and contributions to the State Board of Education will have a lasting impact on public education in Michigan. We all are enriched by his service on the State Board.
"I now look forward to working with Dan Varner on the State Board as we continue accelerating Michigan's education to greater performance by all students in this 21st Century."
Turner resigned Tuesday to devote more time to his family and law practice, after seven years of service on the State Board of Education. Turner said he truly enjoyed his seven years on the State Board and will continue to volunteer in the education community, as he has for more than 20 years.
Varner currently serves as a program officer for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Previously he was cofounder of Think Detroit, a nonprofit organization providing youth recreation services. Varner later led a merger that resulted in the creation of the Think Detroit Police Athletic League, one of the city's largest youth development agencies, and served as CEO.
Varner is appointed for a term expiring January 1, 2015. His appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate.
