What are Tribal casinos?
Native American tribes are sovereign nations. As such, neither the State of Michigan nor the MGCB has regulatory authority over tribal casinos. They are regulated by the National Indian Gaming Commission and/or the government of the appropriate tribal community. There are 23 casinos owned and operated by Native American tribes throughout the state of Michigan in both the upper and lower peninsulas. The total does not include the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians’ Class II facility in Mackinaw City.
