Overview This planning document spans the initial stages of the Systems Engineering Methodology (SEM) including Initiation and Planning, Requirements Definition, Functional Design, and System Design. This document was designed with the small project in mind, yet captures all of the essential elements of maintenance planning, software configuration management planning, requirements specification and traceability, functional design, system design, conversion planning, test planning and test reporting. This document can be supplemented, at the discretion of the project manager and systems development team, with one or more of the full SEM templates as needed to sufficiently capture the details of the system being developed or enhanced. If the system documentation strategy for this system is to continually update master versions of documents, drawings, or other representations, such as an electronic repository that maintains the masters, those representations can be attachments or references to this planning document, where appropriate. 1.1 System Background Provide a high-level description of the system and its background. Clearly indicate if processes are already in place from the development of the system or whether the system has been in maintenance for some time and did not have documented processes. If the processes carried over from development, reference the documents that describe the process. If the processes were not documented before, describe each process in the appropriate section of this plan. This section should clearly define the system or project's conversion procedures; outline the installation of new and converted files/databases; coordinate the development of file-conversion programming, and plan the implementation of conversion procedures. Depending on the factors that must be considered for each system/project, the conversion plan should consider the following: Determine if any portion of the conversion process should be performed manually. Determine whether parallel runs of the old and new systems will be necessary during the conversion process. Understand the function of the data in the old system and determining if the use will be the same or different in the new system. The order that data is processed in the two systems. User work and delivery schedules; time frames for reports, etc. Whether data availability and use should be limited during the conversion process. The disposition of obsolete or unused data that is not converted. Provide a general description of the boundaries of the data conversion effort. This may include the specific system functions affected; functions/data not affected/converted; discussion as to whether the conversion process will be implemented in phases or stages; what data related to certain business processes will be converted first, etc. MACROBUTTON [1] "Click HERE and Type" 7.2 Conversion Activities This section should describe the detailed activities, resources, and schedule associated with the conversion. Note: This information may be depicted in the form of a work breakdown structure (WBS), and appended to the plan. Identify in detail the tasks and subtasks which must be performed in order to effect the conversion. They should be listed in order of required occurrence. All task dependencies should also be identified. Identify the required personnel, equipment, staffing resources, etc., needed to perform each task/subtask. Estimate the time required to complete each task and subtask. MACROBUTTON [1] "Click HERE and Type" 7.3 Conversion Requirements Identify the required personnel, equipment, staffing resources, etc., needed to perform each task/subtask. Note: Information on staffing resources may be depicted in the above referenced work breakdown structure (WBS) and appended to the plan. Provide a description of the data which must be converted (prior to its use in the proposed system). The description should include its name, source form or record layout, storage medium, location, volume, size, access method, and any security considerations. Describe in detail how the conversion will be accomplished. If computer programs are to be used, provide their specifications, e.g., program logic, interfaces, error/exception processes, etc. MACROBUTTON [1] "Click HERE and Type" Data Cross Reference The chart depicts the data layout and a cross reference between the data elements and their destination table/element in a database. MACROBUTTON [1] "Click HERE and Type" 8 Test Planning Test planning is designed to communicate the test approach to team members. It includes the objectives, scope, schedule, risks and approach. This section is designed to clearly identify what the test deliverables will be and what is deemed in and out of scope. 8.1 Objectives, Scope, and Responsibilities Describe the high-level test plan objectives, e.g., products to be delivered, major activities, products milestones, resources, and schedules.
