How It Works

1. Traffic stop occurs and driver receives citation
(Driver is unable to provide proof of insurance at the time of the traffic stop.)

6. Driver must pay Driver Responsibility fee within 30 days

2. Driver is found responsible or guilty of violation
(No Proof of Insurance violations may be dismissed by the court if proof of insurance is provided before the court appearance date. However, court fees may still be required.)
7. If Driver Responsibility fee not paid, driving privileges may be interrupted

3. Court informs the Department of State of driving violation (offense)
(No Proof of Insurance violations not submitted to  the Department of State if proof of insurance was provided.)
8. Collection efforts continue until full payment is received

4. Department of State refers qualifying offenses or points to Department of Treasury for collection
9. Driver Responsibility and reinstatement fees paid in full – driving privileges restored

5. Department of Treasury sends driver notification of Driver Responsibility fee (assessment)
