Driver Responsibility Installment Agreement Information

The Michigan Department of Treasury may enter into an Installment Agreement with a driver who has been assessed Driver Responsibility Fees. Installment Agreements are limited to 24 months in duration to avoid suspension of your license.

Failure to comply with the terms of the Installment Agreement will result in the suspension of the driver's license and other collection actions.

Apply for an Installment Agreement
  1. Complete the Installment Agreement Form. All highlighted areas must be filled in completely before your request for an Installment Agreement can be reviewed for approval.
  2. If you elect to make your monthly payments via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) please complete and mail the EFT form with your Installment Agreement form and your first month's proposed payment.
  3. Mail to: Office of Collections

  4. Or you may fax the completed form to the Office of Collections at (517) 272-5561.
  5. Please allow 10-14 business days for processing the form either by mail or by fax.
Confirmation of Installment Agreement

Installment Agreements are subject to Treasury review and approval. Upon approval you will receive a confirmation letter indicating your monthly payment amount, the due date as well as pre-identified payment coupons to use for directing payments to the Office of Collections. Please make payments as proposed during the time that your Installment Agreement request is under review.

If your Installment Agreement is denied, you will receive instructions from the Office of Collections on how to proceed.

Sending Your Payments
  1. Make your check, cashier's check or money order payable to "State of Michigan-SAC".
  2. Write your assessment number on the check. The assessment number can be found in the upper right hand corner of your notice. See Example of Notice.
  3. Include the pre-identified payment coupon.
  4. Please allow 10-14 days for mailing.
  5. Mail to: Office of Collections

StopDriver Responsibility fee payments cannot be accepted by the courts or at Secretary of State branch offices.

Completion of Installment Agreement

Upon completion of the Installment Agreement, the Michigan Department of Treasury will notify the Secretary of State that the Driver Responsibility Fee(s) covered under the Installment Agreement were paid in full.

Default of Installment Agreement

Failure to comply with the terms of the Installment Agreement will result in the suspension of the driver's license. Any additional assessment notices not included in the agreement or missed payments will be considered default of the agreement and Treasury may take immediate enforcement action such as placing a levy on wages or bank accounts. If your driver's license is suspended, you will be required to pay a $125 driver license reinstatement fee in addition to your driver responsibility fees.
