Bovine TB Free Accreditation
When herds have passed at least two consecutive annual caudal-fold tuberculin tests, have no other evidence of bovine TB, and meet the standards of the
USDA Uniform Methods and Rules (UMR)for Bovine TB Eradication,
they are eligible to be accredited bovine TB-free, by the USDA.
The benefits of a TB accredited free herd are that animals can move freely from one accredited herd to another. There is only an annual whole herd test for any animal movement from the herd.
The requirements for cattle, all animals 24 months of age and older, and any animals other than natural additions under 24 months of age must be tested. The requirements for goats are: all animals 12 months of age or older must be tested. The second annual herd test must be within 10 to 14 months after the initial test.
Strict record keeping and animal quarantines apply. The application process can take several months. The herd owner must have complete and accurate records from two previous whole herd tests.
Producers who wish to have their herds accredited bovine TB free (a federal designation) should send a written request, along with a copy of the annual whole herd TB test charts, to the USDA's Michigan office. For more information contact USDA at (517) 324-5290.
