The Agriscience students of today, are tomorrow's agricultural industry leaders. It is important that they are aware of current issues and challenges that will face them. The bovine tuberculosis (TB) issue in Michigan requires everyone's cooperation and awareness to successfully eradicate the disease.
In order to assist you in teaching your class about bovine TB, the Michigan Department of Agriculture has compiled information in the form of a brochure, power-points, and web-assignments. These resources are available at the www.bovinetb.com web-site and can be down loaded and used in your classroom. For copies of the booklet, please contact Bridget Patrick, Bovine TB Eradication Project Communications Coordinator at (517) 324-3438, or your local extension office.
There are two Bovine Tuberculosis power-point displays. One gives an over view of the problem and causative agent, Mycobacterium. It also gives information on the three common strains. In addition it will go into detail about bovine TB transmission, how the bodies immune system responds, how bovine TB is diagnosed, and the different laboratory tests that are used. There is information included on the human disease, how it infects the body, and the prevalence rate. This is a more biology/science grounded power point that is useful for teaching high school students about TB.
The other is the bovine TB livestock testing process. Please be aware that it will take at least 20 minutes to download these power-point displays.
