WNV Testing

Due to continued reductions in federal funding for WNV surveillance in 2008, the state is no longer able to cover the cost of WNV testing of wildlife, including corvids. Some local health jurisdictions may continue to collect birds for WNV testing if local funding allows. Please see the County Health Department Contact List for your county's information. The reporting of dead bird sightings remains an important WNV surveillance tool, as increasing reports of dead birds, particularly corvids, can indicate increasing human risk for WNV infection in a community. The DNR will accept dead birds for examination as to cause of death, but due to funding constraints, WNV testing will not be routinely performed.
