COUNTY: Oakland
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: 3-year-old child playing in basement, bitten on hand. Only one child receiving P.E.P. No domestic animals exposed.
2. CASE #M01RA000261 
DATE: 2/15/2001
COUNTY: Branch 
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Father found bat on outside bottom of cat litter box in basement. Exposure to cat unknown; cat was euthanized and tested negative. 2 young children in the home; 2 month old and 2 1/2 year old. Medical Director determined no risk of exposure to humans; no PEP treatments administered.

COMMENTS: Observed acting suspiciously. ACO captured and submitted for testing. No human or domestic animals exposed.

SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Bat found in toy box, 9 children in the home, 3 potentially exposed however no evidence of bites. Medical Director suggested P.E.P. for the 3 children, family refused. No domestic animals exposed.

COUNTY: St. Joseph
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Patient was injured while clearing out a brush pile at work. Saw company nurse, thought it was a sting. Went back out to brush pile and found bat flopping on ground. Went back into nurse with the bat and sent to Urgent Care. No wounds found indicative of bite, but patient is undergoing P.E.P. No domestic animals exposed.

SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Dog 1 year old, found a live bat in shed while it was open doing yard work. Current on vaccination was boosted and will watch 45 days. No human or other domestic animal contact.

COUNTY: Newaygo 
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Bat taken from dog's mouth by dog owner, owner bitten by bat. Owner is receiving P.E.P. Dog was current on vaccination, booster and 45-day observation recommended. Owners also own horses. Recommended vaccination of horses. Owner will be vaccinating horses himself.

COMMENTS: 2 year old cat in house overnight alone, no people. Owner returned home, found bat dead on floor. Owner elected to euthanize cat. No humans exposed.

COMMENTS: Bat found dead on floor in morning. 4 humans receiving P.E.P. 2 cats in home, last rabies vaccination was November 1998. Owners considering quarantine rather than euthanasia.

COMMENTS: Bat found outside on ground by a veterinarian and arranged to have it tested. No known or suspected exposure. 1 dog in household, current on vaccination, was boosted as a precaution.

COMMENTS: 2 adults woke to bat in room. 2 cats caught the bat. Bat taken away from cats and packaged for testing. Cats current on vaccinations, booster vaccination recommended. 2 dogs also in household, confined to different room and not exposed (also current on vaccinations).

SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: 5 humans potentially exposed, all are receiving P.E.P. Came home from vacation, while unloading car saw bat in house. 3 days later found bat dead in window fan in parents' room. 3 children sleep downstairs with doors open. One house cat, not vaccinated, is being quarantined for 6 months by veterinarian family member.

COUNTY: Sanilac
SPECIES: Horse
COMMENTS: Unvaccinated pony exhibiting unusual behavior: difficulty standing, attempting to bite people, eventually recumbent and unable to rise. Pony exposed to unknown rabies vector. No other domestic animals exposed. Only human exposure was veterinarian. Sanilac Co. Health Dept. requesting strain typing. Waiting to verify status of other equidae in the herd.

SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Bat found in backyard next to porch. No contact with humans. 2 house cats, vaccination status unknown, had no contact, vaccination recommended. 2 stray cats hanging around outside, ACO placing live traps to capture.

COUNTY: Shiawassee
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: 6yo girl found bat in yard, picked up and was bitten, she is receiving P.E.P. 12wo puppy, no history of contact with bat, being vaccinated. Also, unvaccinated stray cats around home, advised to contact ACO. There are lots of bats in the barn next door.

COUNTY: Menominee
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: 5yo daughter of animal rehabilitator (licensed by DNR) found a bat in yard, handled it, but became entangled in her hair. 9yo brother helped her remove it from her hair, was bitten. Children then took bat to Mom, who handled it with gloves. Bat then died and was submitted for testing. Both children receiving P.E.P. 1 dog and 1 cat in home, both current on vaccination, have been boosted.

COMMENTS: Single man resident, found live bat in home in morning. Can not confirm exposure, but patient is receiving P.E.P. as a precaution. No known domestic animals exposed.

COMMENTS: Patient was camping at Young State Park in Charlevoix. Found a live bat on the beach and picked it up, handled it. Patient is receiving P.E.P. No known domestic animals exposed.

COMMENTS: Bat found on floor of church bathroom. No known humans or domestic animals exposed.

SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Bat found outside bedroom in early morning. No known contact with patient but he is receiving P.E.P. No other human residents. One dog, multiple cats. Dog current on rabies vaccine, is being boosted. Cats kept on enclosed porch attached to house, not loose in house, are being vaccinated. 400 dairy cattle. No vaccines or treatment recommended.

COMMENTS: Bat in house overnight; cat loose in house. Vaccinated 1995-1998 and March 2000; 3-year vaccine given in August 1998. Has been boosted and will be observed for 45 days. Both adults are receiving P.E.P.

COMMENTS: Owners have a home in Pentwater, doing renovations. Male human bitten while sleeping, woke up and caught bat; receiving P.E.P. Spouse not known to have been bitten but also receiving P.E.P. due to having been asleep in same room. 1 dog in home, current on vaccine, being boosted and observed for 45 days.

COMMENTS: Cat caught bat in house, bat taken from cat by owner. One other cat in household, no known contact with the bat. Neither cat was vaccinated. Cat that caught the bat is being euthanized, other cat is being put under 6-month quarantine. Owner is receiving P.E.P.

COMMENTS: Patient was sitting at her computer desk and felt something brush past her. Was not bitten or scratched, but is receiving P.E.P. as a precaution.

COMMENTS: Mom found bat in upstairs bathroom at 11:30pm. She immediately closed the door and left the room. Son and friend in son's room with door closed, father in his room with door closed. Called Animal Control, ACO safely collected bat. No humans exposed. 2 dogs and 2 cats in home, all were current on vaccines, recommended booster.

COMMENTS: Mother, father, and 16yo son got home from Cedar Point at 2am. Son went to his room and saw bat fly through room and land on window screen in his mirror. Closed door and went and got dad. Dad shut window with a broomstick trapping bat. Called Animal Control, ACO safely collected bat. No humans or domestic animals exposed.

SPECIES: Cat 
COMMENTS: Stray mother cat with one kitten taken in by family. 3 1/2 month kitten bit 5yo daughter. Mother cat and kitten delivered to animal control. Kitten quarantined by animal control and isolated, mother cat euthanized at 4 days. Kitten became ill shortly after and submitted for testing. Child receiving P.E.P.

COUNTY: Oakland
SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Bat found on ground in neighborhood. 7 boys had previously been "playing" with it: 3 are brothers, 2 others are brothers, and other 2 are from different families. Health Dept. has contacted all families and 6 of boys only touched bat with sticks, 1 was bitten on the middle finger of his left hand. He was treated at Beaumont Hospital and is undergoing P.E.P. No domestic animals exposed.

COMMENTS: No human or animal exposure, however has had one previous rabies positive bat this summer. Has since shot-gunned area where bats were roosting in barn and buried those that fell.

COMMENTS: 3 1/2 month old kitten in area where ill bat was found. No one else was home at the time. Owners elected to euthanize kitten. No known human exposure.

COMMENTS: 11yo female exposed to bat on ground outside on lawn. No other humans exposed. The child has begun receiving P.E.P. 3 dogs in household, all are current on vaccinations.

COMMENTS: Bat found ill in house. Patient was exposed while providing nursing care to the bat. Patient is receiving P.E.P. No domestic animals exposed.

COMMENTS: 4yo male exposed by picking up dead bat found in front yard. Child had cuts and wounds on his hands, is receiving P.E.P. No domestic animals exposed.

SPECIES: Bat 
COMMENTS: Exposure occurred in Tuscola County. Bat fluttering around in covered porch, landed on floor of porch. 3yo male child fell down on top of it or near it. Boy was scratched, is receiving P.E.P. No domestic animals exposed.
