Governor calls for moment of silence, orders flags lowered

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today encouraged Michigan citizens to reflect on and remember the victims and heroes of the September 11 terrorist attacks by lowering flags and observing a moment of silence Monday, September 11, 2006, which marks the five-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Governor Granholm signed a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff on September 11, 2006, in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.  In the proclamation, Granholm also encouraged citizens to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on that day.
 
“In the aftermath and shock of that horrific day, the extraordinary spirit of American patriotism was reflected in the bravery of the victims and their families, the first responders who risked their lives to ensure the safety of others, and in citizens of all walks of life, united in sadness, who gave of themselves to those in need,” Granholm said.  “That bravery, selfless service and giving spirit ultimately made a torn nation whole again.”
 
The governor’s proclamation is in accordance with Executive Order 2006-10 and federal law designating September 11 as Patriot Day and providing for the lowering of flags to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
 
The state of Michigan remains vigilant against potential terrorist attacks.  In 2006, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security rated 10 of Michigan’s 11 investments in homeland security in the top 15 percent of investments nationwide.  These include the state’s catastrophic preparedness and response programs, establishing a statewide interoperable communications network, the state’s resource management capability, and improving the protection and resiliency of statewide critical infrastructure.
