Swedish Heritage Day

Whereas, Swedish Americans have played an important role in the foundation of our Great Lakes State; and,

Whereas, Michigan is fortunate to count among its population over 200,000 citizens of Swedish descent who make important contributions to our economy and society through their commitment to numerous professions, commerce, family and the arts; and,

Whereas, There are numerous organizations which exist to help recognize and promote the Swedish culture, including the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce, Detroit Swedish Council, SWEA, The Jenny Lind Club, the Swedish Club, and the Swedish American Heritage Society of West Michigan; and,

Whereas, Over the centuries, individuals of Swedish descent have made contributions to society which have changed the world, making it a better place in which to live; and,

Whereas, Swedish Americans continue to strengthen and enrich this country and Michigan through their culture, pride, industriousness, and commitment to the principles upon which our great nation was founded; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 12, 2004, as Swedish Heritage Day in Michigan.
