Whereas, Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and more than 64 million Americans are currently diagnosed with some type of cardiovascular disease; and,
Whereas, Children are at a higher risk of developing heart disease than ever before because of increasingly sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets; and,
Whereas, Over 15 percent of American children, ages 6-19, are obese, putting them at risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes; and,
Whereas, Many factors that contribute to the development of heart disease are preventable through a nutritious diet and regular exercise; and,
Whereas, Increased awareness about the causes of heart disease can improve overall health for adults and children; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 26, 2004, as Heart Day in Michigan.
