Whereas, On May 20th, NASCAR will celebrate its second annual NASCAR Day, a charity initiative to raise money for the Victory Junction Gang Camp, Speedway Children’s Charities, and Speediatrics, all of which are NASCAR related children’s charities; and,
Whereas, O. Bruton Smith started Speedway Children’s Charities in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1984 and it continues to provide direct assistance to children with medical, educational and social challenges; and,
Whereas, Betty Jane France championed a program called Speediatrics, a NASCAR themed pediatric unit at Halifax Medical Center, providing excellent hospital care for children; and,
Whereas, Paul and Newman and Kyle and Pattie Petty founded the Victoria Junction Gang Camp for children with chronic or life threatening diseases such as asthma, diabetes, cancer and heart disease; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 20, 2005, as NASCAR Day in Michigan and I encourage all citizens to recognize the contributions the NASCAR organization has made to better the lives of children around the country.
