Whereas, Cerebral Palsy is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the
brain, usually occurring during feta development; before, during or shortly following
birth or during infancy and although considered incurable, training and therapy
can improve function; and,
Whereas, On Monday, June 14, 2004, companies across Metropolitan Detroit will
hang up their usual attire and slip into something casual to show their support
for people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities; and,
Whereas, “Casual Day” is a partnership between the participating
companies, their employees, and the children and adults that are served through
United Cerebral Palsy; and,
Whereas, “Casual Day” was first initiated in Baltimore, Maryland
on June 20, 1990 and raised more than $20,000; and,
Whereas, Through the years “Casual Day” has spread to over 114
markets and raised over $3.2 million, with 40 companies raising $45,000 in Detroit
in 2003; and,
Whereas, 40 companies, including Comerica and the City of Detroit will be participating
in “Casual Day 2004” with the hope of raising over $150,000 for
the United Cerebral Palsy of Metropolitan Detroit; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim June 14, 2004, as “Casual Day” in Michigan.
