Whereas, The Rails to Trails Conservancy’s mission is to “enrich
America’s communities and countryside by creating a nationwide network
of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors” thereby
connecting these locations of Michigan; and,
Whereas, The Michigan Field Office has committed itself to the creation of
the “Discover Michigan Trail,” a design that will link neighborhoods,
cultural resources, natural and historical attractions, and schools; and,
Whereas, Trails provide an opportunity for recreation, community revitalization,
increased tourism, and conservation of green space; and,
Whereas, Through conferences and seminars, the Michigan Field Office has inspired
citizens across the state to volunteer and get involved; and,
Whereas, This organization has also paired with local governments, the Michigan
Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of Transportation to
make the Rails to Trails project a reality and, in turn, provide events such
as the annual mountain bike tour; and,
Whereas, Residents and visitors are able to enjoy Michigan’s environment,
distinctive communities, and historical landmarks through travel on this non-motorized
transportation conduit; and now therefore be it
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim June 7, 2004, as Michigan Trails and Greenways Day and June
2004 as Michigan Trails and Greenways Month in Michigan.
