people to find work, preparation must begin now to provide valuable summer work
experiences; and,
Whereas, Every summer, communities face the task of providing meaningful employment
opportunities for out-of-school youth, whether they will be returning to school
in the fall or moving permanently into the work force; and,
Whereas, The contributions of local businesses, educational institutions, government,
and community groups are essential to the process of promoting and developing
productive summer opportunities for youth; and,
Whereas, Michigan employers should recognize that hiring young people, even
temporarily, is an investment in the future of the state of Michigan and the
Nation, while such work experiences help reinforce the skills and values taught
in our homes and schools; and,
Whereas, The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth can provide
information to businesses, schools, and parents on aspects of legally and safely
employing minors; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim June 2004, as Youth Employment Month in Michigan, and I urge
employers to offer meaningful, safe and valuable work and volunteer opportunities
for our young people consistent with their skills, abilities and interests.
