Whereas, Jeff Gordon has been one of the most accomplished drivers in the Nextel
Cup Series since his rookie year in 1993, placing him among NASCAR’s top
10 for the tenth year straight; and,
Whereas, Cooperation is the key to success in any endeavor and this is clearly
evident in Jeff Gordon’s team headed by crew chief Robbie Loomis; and,
Whereas, Every component that makes up the #24 DuPont Chevrolet car, from the
pit crew to the spotters above the track, work as one unit to produce the best
outcome on race day; and,
Whereas, In addition to his duties as a NASCAR driver, Jeff Gordon is a community
leader with the Jeff Gordon Foundation, founded in 1999 which primarily supports
charities working on behalf of children in need, with support going to the Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Hendricks Bone Marrow
Foundation, and Riley Hospital of Children in Indianapolis; and,
Whereas, Jeff Gordon was named 1997’s NASCAR Person of the Year by Winston
Cup Illustrated Magazine, and also received the True Value Man of the Year award
in 1996 for his work on behalf of Leukemia research; and,
Whereas, On June 9, 2004 representatives from the Michigan International Speedway
and the entire Michigan community will recognize the numerous accomplishments
of Jeff Gordon; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim June 9, 2004, as Jeff Gordon Day in Michigan and I salute
his commitment to the sport of racing and various philanthropic efforts.
