Whereas, June signifies the beginning of a new growing season for over 125 commodities
grown in Michigan; and,
Whereas, Michigan's food and agriculture industry, our state's second largest
industry, contributes over $37 billion to our state's economy each year; and,
Whereas, In addition to fresh commodities, Michigan's food processing industry
adds value to Michigan crops and livestock, producing a variety of products
from pastas, sauces, and wines to jams, hot dogs, apple pies and much more -
virtually any product desired; and,
Whereas, Michigan's integrated network of family farmers, processors, wholesalers,
retailers, and consumers work to ensure a safe and nutritious food supply enjoyed
by millions throughout our state, the nation and the world; and,
Whereas, Survey results show that Michigan consumers prefer to purchase Michigan
grown and processed products, and the Select Michigan, Select Michigan Fresh
and Select Michigan Organic logos help consumers identify Michigan products
at the retail level; and,
Whereas, The Select Michigan pilot campaign in Grand Rapids increased sales
of Michigan food products on average 111 percent in 2003; the Select Michigan
campaign will be returning to Grand Rapids and will be expanded to the Detroit
area beginning in June with a series of food features, events and tastings that
follow the harvest schedule; and,
Whereas, Selecting Michigan food keeps our food dollars circulating in our
local communities, adds value to Michigan’s family farms, improves the
quality of life of our citizens in both rural and urban areas, and preserves
our farmland and rich agricultural heritage; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim June, 2004, as Select Michigan Month, and I encourage all
citizens to “Select Michigan” food and agriculture products year-round.
