Governor Granholm Announces Recent Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:

Michigan Home Based Child Care Council Board of Directors

Cirilo Martinez of Paw Paw, attorney at the law office of Cirilo Martinez, PLLC, is appointed for a term expiring September 7, 2011.  He succeeds Patricia Oviedo whose term has expired.

The Michigan Home Based Child Care Council focus is on improving the quality of child care provided in home settings in Michigan.  The council is charged with making recommendations to public agencies, public bodies, or public officials regarding regulations, legislation, appropriations, and programs in regard to the system of providing child care in Michigan.

This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports
 
Lila Lazarus of Commerce, anchor and health reporter for Fox 2 WJBK-TV, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.  She succeeds Cheryl L. Angelelli who has resigned.

The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports is charged with coordinating and developing a statewide physical fitness and health program.  The council has undertaken a number of initiatives and partnered with several organizations to carry out their goals; some notable events are the annual "Walk to School Day" and partnering with the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association for "Walk Michigan."

This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Advisory Committee on Pain and Symptom Management

Michael A. Stellini, M. D. of Taylor, assistant professor of medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, is appointed to represent the Wayne State University School of Medicine for a term expiring July 1, 2009.  He succeeds Dr. Robert J. Zalenski whose term has expired. 

The Advisory Committee on Pain and Symptom Management is charged with addressing issues pertaining to pain and symptom management, holding public hearings to gather information from the general public, and making recommendations to the Legislature. 

This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Board of Acupuncture                                                                            

Matthew T. Steigenga of East Lansing, senior associate with CBRE/ Martin, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2011. 

The Michigan Board of Acupuncture, created in 2006, is responsible for promulgating rules that set forth minimum standards for registration as an acupuncturist.  

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Board of Audiology

John D. VanDeventer of East Lansing, director of online communications for the Granholm Leadership Fund, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2008.  He succeeds Yvette M. Barrett who has resigned. 

The Michigan Board of Audiology was created pursuant to Public Act 97 of 2004 and is responsible for overseeing the licensure and regulation of audiologists, including establishing specific requirements for licensure.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Board of Nursing

Jeffrey H. Breslin, R.N. of Dansville, registered nurse at Sparrow Hospital, is appointed to represent professional registered nurses without a baccalaureate degree engaged in nursing practice or nursing administration for a term expiring June 30, 2011. He succeeds Deborah L. Heath whose term has expired.

James H. Childress of Grand Rapids, vice president of marketing, public relations and communications for Metro Health, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2010.  He succeeds Kathryn E. Lawter whose term has expired.

The Michigan Board of Nursing is responsible for the interpretation of licensure and examination of registered professional nurses, licensed practical nurses, and for the certification of nursing specialists.  The board shall set minimum standards of practice and assess penalties for when those standards are not met and recommend licensure to schools that provide nursing programs. 

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Board of Respiratory Care                                                                             

Carl F. Haas of Ann Arbor, educational and research coordinator of the University of Michigan Health System, is appointed to represent respiratory therapists for a term expiring December 31, 2011.  He succeeds David L. Zobeck whose term has expired.

Kathleen M. Mutch of Novi, researcher and student assistant at Wayne State University, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2010.  She succeeds Frank J. Couckuyt whose term has expired.

Frank R. Sprague of Muskegon, vice president and chief medical officer for Mercy General Health Partners, is reappointed to represent medical directors for a term expiring December 31, 2011. 

The Michigan Board of Respiratory Care was recently created by an amendment to the Public Health Code.  The board is responsible for overseeing the licensure of and reviewing and approving rules in the scope of practice for respiratory therapists in Michigan.   

These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Board of Veterinary Medicine                                                                             

Kimlee E. Beattie of East Lansing, senior analyst for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2009.  She succeeds Anne E. Lawter whose term has expired. 

Michelle Kopcha, D.V.M. of Haslett, practice based ambulatory program coordinator of large animal clinical sciences at Michigan State University, is appointed to represent veterinarians for a term expiring December 31, 2010.  She succeeds William M. Reed whose term has expired.

Christopher J. Rohwer, D.V.M. of Kalamazoo, chief of staff for Sprinkle Road Veterinary Clinic, appointed to represent veterinarians for a term expiring December 31, 2010. He succeeds Patricia O'Handley whose term has expired.

Amanda J. Stitt of Lansing, political consultant, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2011.  She succeeds the late Murray J. Chodak.

Henry M. Vaupel, D.V.M. of Fowlerville, hospital manager and practice manager of Kern Road Veterinary Clinic, is reappointed to represent veterinarians for a term expiring December 31, 2010. 

The Board of Veterinary Medicine is responsible for the licensure and examination of veterinarians and veterinary technicians.   

These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
