Governor Granholm Appoints Four to Michigan Environmental Science Board

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments to the Michigan Environmental Science Board:

Michael Barcelona, Ph.D. of Marshall, professor and chairperson of the Department of Chemistry at Western Michigan University. Dr. Barcelona is appointed to represent individuals with expertise in chemistry for a term expiring August 6, 2006. He succeeds Dr. John A. Gracki whose term has expired.

Joan Bray Rose, Ph.D. of Williamston, Homer Nowlin Endowed Chair for Water Research and Natural Resource Systems for the College of Agriculture at Michigan State University. Dr. Rose is appointed to represent individuals with expertise in microbiology for a term expiring August 6, 2006. She succeeds Dr. Ronald H. Olsen whose term has expired.

Gerald Keeler, Ph.D. of Ann Arbor, professor for the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan. Dr. Keeler is appointed to represent individuals with expertise in atmospheric sciences for a term expiring August 6, 2006. He succeeds Dr. George T. Wolff whose term has expired.

Nicholas Mercuro, Ph.D. of Okemos, professor in residence at Michigan State University – Detroit College of Law. Dr. Mercuro is appointed to represent individuals with expertise in economics for a term expiring August 6, 2006. He succeeds Dr. Eileen O. Van Ravenswaay whose term has expired.

The board is an independent state agency first established in 1992 to provide scientific and technical advice to the Governor on matters affecting the protection and management of environmental and natural resources.

These appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
